Thermal Imaging and Clandestine Surveillance using Low‐Cost Polymers with Long‐Wave Infrared Transparency

With increasing use of infrared imaging in medical diagnostics, military and civilian surveillance, navigation autonomous vehicles, there is a need for low-cost alternatives to traditional materials used optics such as germanium. Sulfur-rich copolymers hold promise, they are made from feedstocks have high refractive index. In this report, cyclopentadiene copolymerized with sulfur provide plastic the highest long-wave transparency reported date class materials. Diverse lens architectures accessible through melt casting or reactive injection molding. The featured copolymer black, which enabled its an infrared-transparent blind protection thermal equipment clandestine surveillance. These findings portend expanded optics.
